I believe in working "Smarter", not "Harder." Utilizing the components from the Daily Five is a great way to manage your Reading Instruction time. I have 12 literacy tubs and included in those tubs is Read to Self, Read to Someone Else, Work on Writing, Working with Words and Listening, which are components of the Daily Five. The remaining 7 tubs have activites that are generic and can be switched out at the discretion of the teacher. Some examples include Readers Theater where you respond to a book, stamping, magnetic fun, making some type of book, playdough, computers and pocket chart. A couple of the tubs can be seasonal activities as well. Guided Reading is done while students work in tubs and there are never more than two students in a tub at a time, sometimes only one ends up in a tub. A rotation system is needed as well so that students can visualize where to go on a particular day. I also create a generic record sheet with most tubs so that work progress can be kept in a folder to use with student conferences.

I would forget the centers and do Daily 5. I will never go back to centers after doing Daily 5.
