Using the reading series within the Daily 5

I have started reading the Daily 5 and researching what others have done with it.

I haven't read anywhere how to incorporate the county mandated reading series within the Daily 5.

We are required to use the basals and the workbooks.

How can I incorporate this into the Daily 5? Thanks for any help!!

Many basal series are designed to have a 30 minute whole group time and then an hour of small groups. To incorporate Daily 5 into our basal reading program, we broke the 30 minute whole group time into three 10 minute mini-lessons. This has encouraged us to really focus on the most important pieces of the basal lessons and allows students more time to implement and practice strategies in authentic literature. As far as the workbooks go, we were given permission to stop using them if we chose. (We definitely did!) However, if you must, you could make the daily workbook page one of their Daily 5 rounds, word work perhaps.
