Spelling words independently

by Joyce Raney
(Urbana, IL, USA)

After my model and mini-lesson, the students go to their seats with their journals.

They are supposed to draw a picture and write a sentence about the picture.

Immediately they bombard me with "I can't" statements.

They can't hear the individual words and/or sounds, and if they can, they aren't willing to try to spell them.
