Separate Work and Home - Get a Life!

You are not your job. Your job is not you. Separate work and home. Make sure that you remember that sometimes. I have seen many teachers stay at school until 7, 8, 9pm night after night. That isn’t healthy. It isn’t necessary. And in some schools, it isn’t safe.

If you feel like you “need” to stay that long every night you might need some help in organizing, time management, or planning. Ask for help. We only get paid for the hours that the children are in the building, so if you are working 12 hour days every day but getting paid for 8 you might need to find another strategy to get your work finished.

I made a promise to myself a few years back to not do more than 1 hour extra work each day. That way I have to leave school by a certain time to make my promise. I don’t drive myself crazy – I get done what can get done, and if it isn’t finished it will get done tomorrow.
