Reading With Strategies

Reading With Strategies

Reading With Strategies is one of my favorite activities during the week. I teach one card per week.

First, we brainstorm words that we think might be in the text (shown here).

Second, we reveal the first sentence and see if we are on the right track, modifiy our predictions and make more predictions.

Third, we reveal the rest of the page with a few "key" words covered up by post-it notes so the kids have to use the "Does it make sense" tool. Then we procede to slide the post-its over to use the beginning sounds tool, and we may "chunk" the word if it is able.

Finally, we discuss the card as a whole. What do you notice? What do you wonder? What would you write?

This quick, little 5 minute lesson is so valuable in reinforcing skills needed to be successful!

This is also a great way to introduce all of the decoding and comprehension skills needed to become a great reader.
