Beginning of the year: Reading tent

I have a Reading Tent as my reading center (it is basically one of those "half tents" that are used for shade on the beach).

I decorate the tent in a thematic way as well.

For example, in January I have drawn rectangular blocks on a white shower curtain to drape over the tent to make it look like an igloo.

I regularly change out the books in that station and have them organized in labeled bins accorging to theme, author study, etc.

I also have reading glasses, pointers, puppets, and a writing tool which is designed for the students to write words that the know or want to learn that they find in the books they read.

However this is the least favorite of my centers that the children like to go to.

I don't know what else to spice it up!

How can I get them to want to go to this station? Is there something I can do to this station to make them want to choose it during choice centers? HELP!

I think that the reading center should be a place where students can go to feel comfortable and to get away and just READ! I would suggest that you don't require students to respond to the books but just let them enjoy them in other ways. Also, don't have so much stuff or choices. This too could be overwhelming to the child. Provide a few pointers, the glasses are good and just have a few book bins available for them to choose from. Include books that have been read in class so that students see something familiar. Sometimes we can go overboard with always having students responsible for "responding" at centers and not allowing them to create their own learning environment. Hope this helps.
