Morning Woes - Morning Work

by Amy
(Fresno, CA)

I'm having trouble keeping kids engaged with a quality activity as soon as they come into the room.

After they arrive, hang their backpacks up, move their lunch cards, there can be anywhere from 5 to 10 minute until the principal comes on the loudspeaker with the flag salute and announcements.

Keep in mind too, that I always have a few straggler students who arrive a few minutes late. Having the students just sit and wait obviously creates many problems.

Book bins are used at other transition times, so I'd rather not use them during this short, odd time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You,

quiet book time
by: Anonymous

I was having trouble with kids straggling in and not completing the DOL or handwriting practice I was giving or kids coming early and finishing before the late bell rang. I was also having trouble giving kids time to update their book bins so now they come in, pull their book bins and update them as necessary and then they have quiet reading time where they can read I Spy and Where's Waldo books. They love these and it's an opportunity for them to read in larger groups rather than with just one person. Now kids come early so they can I Spy read before our morning meeting.

Settling in Time
by: Linda

When my students arrive, they put their TIGER HOMEWORK FOLDER in the tub. They also put in their lunch card and their FISH. Next, we have quiet choice until 9:15 when we regroup with my TEAM PARTNERS FOR READING. THE CHILDREN WORK AT COMPUTERS, LISTEN TO BOOKS ON CDs, DO PUZZLES, READ, WRITE, DRAW, AND WORK ON SCROLLS.
During this time, they visit quietly with friends while I do attendance and work with individuals.

Morning Work Suggestion

I had my students do "Drops in a Bucket." The book game with "Frog Games." If not that, I have also used Daily Oral Language/or the Math. They are great books that do nothing but review. I hope this will help you in someway.

Hi, I had that problem too, so I just started giving easy review sheets, or handwriting sheets. During that time they could also write a short idea in their journal or a quick math sheet. If they don't finish it, it becomes homework or they may get time later, let me know what you think...
