Improving writing instruction with my kindergarten students

by Jodi Holzer
(Oregon)

I teach in a full day kindergarten program.

It seems that most of my day is spent teaching reading and math.

I try to incorporate journal writing in reading group once a week using sight words we are learning along with CVC words the children can spell.

This is very controlled though as I give sentence prompts and it only reaches the reading level kids I am working with.

I have no assistant help outside of reading and have many pull outs occuring frequently in the afternoons for speech, reading interventions, smart program etc.

I am having difficulty finding the time to teach writing every day with my own class. I would like to do more writing using picture books and making class books using writing forms and sentence prompts.

Are there any excellent resources available for this?

Journals NEW
by: Carmen

Just an idea...
In the class I have been observing they do journals daily. They have a time in the morning where one student shares a story. After this, all of the students write about this story. If time allows, they draw a picture to go with the story. Fridays are "Free Choice Fridays" where the students can write about anything they want. I love that the students have a time each day to express themselves and recall a story with writing. Even if you did not have time daily a couple times a week would be great.

Writer's Workshop is more "free" NEW
by: Mrs. Mikesell

Hi!

After reading your question, I had the feeling that you might be trying to "control" the writing a bit too much.

Writer's Workshop is a time for the kids to get their ideas on paper - not via journal or prompt. This might help you get the kids to write more and more amazing stories.

Check out the video at http://www.elementary-teacher-resources.com/Great_Elementary_Teacher_Resources-2009february_2.html

I think it would help you out.

Even if you only taught Writer's Workshop 2-3 days a week, it would really help them become more independent writers.
