Improving Kindergarten Writing Instruction

by Jodi Holzer
(Oregon)

I teach in a full day kindergarten program.

It seems that most of my day is spent teaching reading and math.

I try to incorporate journal writing in reading group once a week using sight words we are learning along with CVC words the children can spell.

This is very controlled though as I give sentence prompts and it only reaches the reading level kids I am working with.

I have no assistant help outside of reading and have many pull outs occuring frequently in the afternoons for speech, reading interventions, and smart program.

I am having difficulty finding the time to teach writing every day with my own class.

I would like to do more writing using picture books and making class books using writing forms and sentence prompts.

Are there any excellent resources available for this?
