How to motivate kids to read during the summer months?

Summer is quickly approaching and my students have made an enormous amount of progress in the area of reading.


How do you keep your students reading over the summer?

There are many ways to motivate kids to read during the summer.
One way that I stumbled upon recently was a reading basket where kids put there summer books as well as any reading response sheets/journals in a basket. This provides a visual of their goal for the summer.
Let them pick out a special book at the book store or on an online book store. There are alot of discount book stores online - amazon.com or bookcloseouts.com or thriftbooks.com are a few I use.
I know in our area that Barnes and Noble has a special reading program this summer that rewards students with a free book. What a great way to motivate and then encourage even MORE reading. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/summerreading/index.asp
