How to be a better writing teacher?

by Connie
(Chico, CA)

I teach all day Kindergarten, but have very little time to teach writing, since most of my ELA instruction time is taken up teaching phonics and reading.

My administrator gave us Step Up To Writing training that uses Lucy Calkins Primary Writing books, but I'm overwhelmed by how much time is needed.

The other Kindergarten teachers do their own thing, and I'm on the fence as to how to proceed with my writing instruction.

How much time do you need to teach Kindergarten writing? Can you give me some suggestions so I can teach it given my tight time constraints (20-30 minutes)?

Thank you so much for your time and energy--you totally rule.
