How often to meet with guided reading groups?

by Penny
(Ponte Vedra FL USA)

I am a K teacher who has 19 students.

I have 4 guided reading groups.

This year, I decided to stop frustrating myself and the kiddies and I now meet with each group weekly, but for 20-30 min.

I feel like I am more successful at teaching to their point of need in this longer time frame, instead of 10 min. sessions.

However, I have the problem of the other groups working independently.

They have leveled books to read when they are finished.

I try to avoid so many products and leave room for creativity.

What are many of you finding the most effective?

Meeting with every child each day or meeting with groups weekly? Any ideas?

Thanks!
