First Grade Bell Work?

by susan
(IL)

I recently made the change from teaching 2nd Grade to 1st Grade.

I used H. Wong's "bell work" strategy for the students upon arrival.

I loved it.

I gave the 2nd Graders 2 sentences to fix up and a math problem.

These were on the board, so when the students were finished hanging up their things, they knew that they had to get right to work. (I used the DOL for the sentences).

They copied the board work into a notebook.

This worked well with 2nd Graders, but I don't know how well 1st Graders, at the beginning of the year, can copy from the board to a notebook.

Any ideas?
