The Essential 55

The Essential 55 by Ron Clark is a fun, fast, easy summer read for anyone who needs to recharge their batteries. I read it in about 2 days while floating in my pool.

It is basically a list in story form of the 55 rules for living, loving and learning. They are written in a simple manner that can be used in pre-k through high school.

Some examples of The Essential 55:

Rule #9: Always say thank you... There is no excuse for not showing appreciation."

I started using this rule in my room, and other adults on campus really noticed! Something this simple should be commonplace, but it just isn't these days and we have to teach it.

Rule #26: Do not save seats in the lunchroom... We are all a family, and we must treat one another with respect and kindness."

Whoa. This, again, is so obvious, but not practiced often enough. My children now sit with whomever, and don't make a peep about it because they know that they wouldn't want to hurt someone's feelings.

If you can get your hands on this book, read it. It not only gave me great ideas but validated many things that I was already doing in my room.

It left me with a smile. And isn't that what we want the most?
