Daily Five in Kindergarten

by Chris
(Palatine, IL)

My school district embraced the Daily Five philosophy a few years ago.

I totally "Kindergarten-ized" it and use it February through June.

It is amazing at how it has impacted my students' ability to read and write!

Once it is flowing smoothly, my PA does crowd control and I meet 1:1 with each student doing guided reading and skills reinforcement - all differentiated to meet each student's needs.

Daily 5
by: Miss Sager

I will be using the daily five in Kindergarten. Except I am thinking of doing the Thrilling Three. 5 different choices seems like it might be a bit much for the kinders. So I will start the year right away with three. I will be doing Read to self, work with words and listening to reading. I will begin the year modeling read to self for the first 2-3 weeks and building stamina. If the students are able to handle the three then I will work the other two aspects in. I wanted to keep writing seperate for now because of Writer's Workshop. I am currently working on completing my Pensive so that I am able to conference with groups of 2-3 students during the Daily 5. I actually will be posting a podcast on my website and try and keep you updated. I will let you know when I post it.

Have a great summer!

How to make daily 5 work in a K-1 combo
by: Anonymous

I would also like to know how Chris "kinder-ized" it. :) I have a k-1 combination and would love to use it in my class but am having trouble figuring out the best way to make it work. Any ideas would be very useful.

Weekly 5?
by: Mrs. Mikesell

I haven't heard back about what she did to Kindergarten-ize it. :(

I think that if you have a 1/2 day plan, they you might want to make it more like a WEEKLY 5.

One day do Read to Self, the next day do Word Work, etc...

I have found that the Read to Self has been the most helpful for my First Graders this year - and it would probably be most powerful for the second half of Kindergarten.

Still hoping to hear more about what she did, though!

Mrs. Mikesell :)

Can Daily 5 be done in 1/2 day kindergarten along with teaching the other subjects? I would also appreciate more details on how it is done in kdg, along with a schedule.
