Daily 5 and Grades

I just started using the Daily 5 and am struggling to try to fit in everything.


I don't want to worksheet my kids to death, but there are a few worksheets from our reading series that I really feel is valuable - like the comprehension ones.


Do any of you use any worksheets and if so when do the kids complete them?


Also do you still have a main reading story for your class that you test over? When do you work on that story? If you don't have a main story where do you get any grades.


I know this is a lot of questions, but I want to make sure that I am doing it correctly from the start!

For the writing area, I sometimes use writing journals directly related to reading comprehension. Our school district uses Making Meaning so that is our main story each day. The kids make a guided response during their writing time either in their journal or a worksheet I have created. Other times, they are able to free write, or write about a story they are currently reading. I also have a Daily 5 folder that the kids put their work in. One side of the folder is labeled, "finished" and the other is labeled "still working on." If they don't finish something they started, they put it in the "still working on" side of the folder. I try to collect these folders periodically to check how much they are completing, and how hard they work on each activity. Our grading system has recently changed to where there is an effort grade we can give. I use these activities as an effort or participation grade. I hope this helps somewhat!

I'm trying out the daily five with my first graders this year. Right now we are doing the reading and writing part. I'm not sure I want my students to be free to choose what they want to do (write, read, word work), I think they are to young for that. I am just teaching them about IPICK and ways to read with a partner right now.
