Addition and subtraction

My son has math homework and I was not sure what is the answer to this.

Directions: Solve each problem and use the space to the right to explain how you solved each problem.

1. 4 + 2 =

My son wrote down, "I use my brain." Is this acceptable? If not, can you provide example?

"I used my brain" is what I hear most often, but alas, it isn't an acceptable answer.

Here are some better choices that show what the process was that happened:

-- I put two fingers on one hand and 4 fingers on the other and combined.

-- I put the bigger number 4 in my head and counted on 2 more.

-- I drew 4 then 2 more.

It's all about HOW they solved it.

While using your brain is totally needed, what you did with your brain is what the teacher wants to know.
