Personalized Professional Development

This is only a few of the
trainings I've done this year!
I love learning.

So, when I started thinking about personalizing my professional development I was really intrigued.

I attend hundreds of hours of training each year.

While I get to pick the trainings I attend – they are from a bank of trainings that someone has created.

This all changed this year.

I thought Twitter was for teenagers. And maybe celebrities. Or possibly celebrity teenagers? Who knows!

But, for sure, not for professionals.

Wow – was I wrong.

I had tried tweeting a few years ago, but I felt like I was shouting into the wind.

I didn’t get a response.

No feedback.

So, I gave up.

A few months ago I learned what #hashtags were and a whole new world opened up for me.

#hashtags are like conversation tracking tools. They help people who are talking about the same thing follow the discussion.

Some of my favorite discussions are:
  • #FLedChat (Florida Education)
  • #whatisschool (A bit of philosophy)
  • #RuralEdChat (Rural education needs)
  • #COLChat (Culture of Learning)
  • #TeacherWellBeingChat (Just like it says!)

All of these discussions have a moderator that shares questions and people can reply, reflect and share.

The beauty of learning on Twitter is you do it when you have time, and when you don’t have time you just don’t login!

Plus, also, you can Tweet in your PJ’s. Or at your child’s soccer practice. Or waiting at the doctor. Or, or, or.

All you need is a device that connects to the internet.

So, go and create an account.

Make it as personal as you feel comfortable.

Share what you want – don’t share what you don’t want.

Start checking out some #hashtags and see the power of a professional discussion on a topic you pick at your pace.

It’s amazing.

If this is something you want to try – follow me on Twitter and we can talk and get you started!
