Standards and Sales!

Math Stations: Group Test Review

Ug. Assessment. Testing. Data.

Sometimes it seems like we don’t teach at all because we are so busy with this part of our job.

I don’t have a solution to cutting down the assessing – but I do have a way to have the children succeed at math assessments!

My teammate and I started doing “Math Stations” for test review about a year ago and have seen a huge increase in our math scores.

We do math “Stations” the day before any chapter assessment.

We write out sample test questions for the kids, mix our students together into small groups of 5-7 and have them rotate through the questions.

They solve the problems, talk about them and record their answers in their journals.

Once the kids have gone through all the stations, the questions are discussed large group to clear up any lingering confusion.

We have found that this little 30-45 minute activity has greatly increased our math scores and the students’ comprehension.

But even more exciting is that it’s getting the children to “talk math”… and we all know how important it is for the kids to be able to explain their thinking!

Keeping Standards in Mind All The Time

Standards. Standards! Standards?

So often we hear “The Standards are your curriculum!” but how do you really make sure that you’re teaching the Standards?

Well…this year I printed all of the standards I will be held accountable for and hung them on the wall by my desk.

This is a constant visual reminder of where I’m going and where we’ve been this year.

I highlight each quarters’ standards a different color to see how I’m progressing.

This constant reminder is great for people who get off course or need a visual to lesson plan.

I even told my parents about it and now they know that if they want to see what has been taught this year – they can check the wall.

Easy cheesy!
