I teach first grade, but I don't see why my method wouln't work for 2nd grade as well.
I have 3 reading groups. While one group is working with me, one group in in their seats doing "independent work" that i have listed ont he board- usually workbook pages from the practice, phonics and grammar books, and sentence writing from text book activities. The remaining group is working with my aide (or a volunteer parent) on some phonics/spelling game. Now, I did this 3 days a week- with one group in each place each day. Monday was all whole group, TU/WED/TH were switching days, and then Friday was test day. We start our lang arts block with writers workshop from 8:15-8:55. Then the full group instruction from 9-9:15...then the smaller groups- one a day tues-th- from 9:15-9:45...and then from 9:45 to 10:50 we copy homework.....
